The Plateau North Unity Forum has formally endorsed Professor Danladi Atu for the 2027 Plateau North Senatorial seat, citing the need for unity, equitable representation, and credible leadership in the zone.
Addressing journalists on behalf of the Forum at Villa Grande Hotel in Jos, spokesperson for the group , Mr. Timothy Choji Kim said the decision followed an extensive review of past representation in the National Assembly, which they described as inadequate and lacking in impact.
He noted that the zone has suffered years of underdevelopment, largely due to divisions along ethnic, religious, and cultural lines, stressing that the Forum was established to bridge these gaps and promote a new era of inclusive leadership.
“The zone has been grossly underrepresented, and this has slowed development. We believe unity-driven leadership is key to reversing this trend,” he said.
Reasons for Endorsement
The Forum outlined several reasons for backing Professor Atu, emphasizing that its decision was based on competence, experience, and his ability to unify the diverse peoples of Plateau North.
According to the group, Atu’s academic background in Peace Education and Social Rehabilitation positions him as a strong candidate capable of addressing conflict and fostering cohesion in a region often affected by ethno-religious tensions.
They also highlighted his leadership experience, including his tenure as Chairman of Jos North Local Government and Secretary to the Plateau State Government, describing him as a tested administrator with a track record of service delivery.
The Forum further cited his grassroots connection, integrity, and commitment to youth empowerment and community development as critical factors in his endorsement.
“Professor Atu is not only academically sound but also a man of integrity with deep grassroot acceptance. His experience and network will attract development and investment to Plateau North,” the group stated.
Call for Inclusive Representation.
Beyond competence, the Forum stressed the importance of equity and inclusiveness in political representation. It pointed out that key political positions in the state are currently held by individuals from the same ethnic group.
Specifically, the group noted that the State party chairman is from Barkin Ladi, while the Deputy Governor hails from Riyom, both of Berom extraction. It argued that, in the interest of fairness and balance, the Plateau North senatorial seat should be occupied by a candidate from another ethnic group within the northern zone.
“This is about fairness and inclusion. Supporting a candidate from another ethnic nationality will strengthen unity and give every group a sense of belonging,” the Forum added.
Vision for 2027.
The Forum maintained that its endorsement goes beyond politics, describing it as part of a broader effort to promote peace, unity, and sustainable development in Plateau North and across Nigeria.
It called on stakeholders, community leaders, and residents of the zone to support Atu’s candidacy, urging them to set aside differences and work towards a common goal of progress and shared prosperity.
The group also commended Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, and President Bola Tinubu for their efforts in promoting unity and peaceful coexistence in the State and the country at large.
The Forum passed a unanimous vote of confidence in Atu, describing him as a credible, capable, and unifying figure fit to represent Plateau North in the Senate come 2027.
