World Aids Day PLACA sensitizes Citizens on Stigma, Mutfwang commits to support agency

As part of activities marking the 2024 World Aids Day, the Plateau State Aids Control Agency, PLACA had recently organized a symposium to sensitize the public on HIV and AIDS which is in the increase.

The symposium started with a rally by the agency and other partners from Old Airport roundabout in Jos, where the organizers were holding banners and distributing flyers to create awareness among citizens.

At the symposium which was held at Crest Hotel Jos, Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang who was represented by the State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Josephine Piyo appreciated efforts of all partners in ensuring safety among citizens.

He called on people to show compassion, empathy and understanding to people living with the virus, noting that they need love and care.

The Gov. said his administration has awarded contract for the renovation of the building hosting the State AIDS Control Agency to ensure conducive environment for multi sectorial HIV/AIDS response.

He revealed that under his watch, Plateau State AIDS Control Agency has intensified effort in building capacity of healthcare workers who have been trained on HIV cases identification.

He announced that his administration has significantly increased funding for HIV/AIDS programs this year.

In his words, “These resources are directed toward enhancing prevention services, expanding access to testing and treatment, and providing comprehensive support for individuals living with HIV.

“This funding is more than a financial investment, it is a testament to our determination to leave no one behind.

“Together, we must eliminate stigma and discrimination, creating a safe and supportive environment where everyone can seek care without fear.

” I call on all citizens—healthcare professionals, educators, advocates, and community leaders—to join hands with us in this critical mission. Let us take the right path: educate ourselves and others, promote safe practices, encourage regular testing, and amplify the voices of the marginalized. Together, we can foster a culture of awareness, acceptance, and proactive action.

“As we observe World AIDS Day, let us honor the memory of those we have lost by doubling our efforts for a brighter future. Let us commit to a Plateau State where HIV/AIDS is no longer a barrier to living a full and vibrant life.”

In her welcoming address, Executive Director of the Plateau State Aids Control Agency, PLACA, Mrs. Esther Turaki while appreciating the governor for his support to the agency in the fight against HIV and AIDS, noted that new infection is in the increase among people.

She identified Stigmatization as one of the major factor that is hindering people from accessing HIV Services and called on all citizens to take the right paths to end stigma among people.

Mrs. Turaki also thanked other partners for the support accorded the agency to ensure success of the 2024 World Aids Day celebration.

There were goodwill messages from the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk among other stakeholders.
