The Chairman of Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, (PLASIEC), Mr. Plangji Cishak has said his commission believes that scrapping of State Independent Electoral Commission is unconstitutional and catastrophic to the collective aspirations of the people for the creation of strong democratic structures at the grassroots.
The Commission Chairman stated this while briefing Journalists at the PLASIEC headquarters in Jos, ahead of the 13th National Delegates Conference of the Forum of Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON), to be hosted in Plateau State.
According to him, while some are questioning their independence, instead of scrapping them, there is need to pursue reform, capacity-building, and the standardisation of processes across the country.
“Here in Plateau, we have shown that SIECs can work if given the right leadership, resources, and institutional backing. The October 2024 local government elections, though not without challenges, remain a reference point for what is possible. The upcoming conference is therefore another opportunity to shape the national narrative around local elections and democratic accountability.”
He said the 3-day event is scheduled to take place from the 21st to the 23rd of May 2025, in Jos, Plateau State, the “Home of Peace and Tourism” and that central to the conversation will be the future of SIECs themselves.
“The theme for this year’s conference is both timely and compelling: “Local Government Elections in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities.” It is a theme that calls for sober reflection, informed debate, and actionable outcomes.
“We expect to welcome no fewer than 304 delegates drawn from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. These will include Chairmen, Commissioners, and Secretaries of various State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs).”
Mr. Cishak said the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, will chair the ceremony as three serving governors, representatives of the Forum of Nigerian House of Assembly Speakers, and members of the National Assembly—particularly the Senate and House Committees on Electoral Matters are expected at the conference.
“Their participation underscores the national significance of the issues on the table and reflects a shared commitment to strengthening local governance through credible elections. We are also grateful for the support of DAI International Development in working with FOSIECON and other institutions to advance electoral reforms, civic engagement, and institutional resilience.” He added.
Mr. Cishak while appreciating journalists for their support, solicited for better cooperation from the media. He also used the opportunity to enumerate the success story of the commission under his leadership, especially the conduct of the October, 2024 local government elections in the state.
