COCIN Called to Immortalise the Legacies of Lucy Kumm

Prof. Clement Dakas has called on the Church of Christ In Nations, COCIN, to immortalise the legacies of Lucy Kumm by naming a building or offering a scholarship in her name.

He made the call yesterday at COCIN Headquarters Compound Church in Jos while delivering a special lecture organized by the Light Bearer newspaper in honour of late Lucy Kumm, its initiator and first editor and to also raise funds for the recapitalization of the paper.

“Lucy’s life and legacy are intertwined with the very fabric of the COCIN community, embodying the values of faith, service, and unwavering dedication. Honoring her memory – e.g. by naming a major COCIN structure after her and/or endowing a scholarship or academic prize in her honour at any of the COCIN tertiary institutions – resonates with the essence of her life’s work.” Prof. Dakas said.

Recounting some of her physical and spiritual legacies, the Guest Lecturer said Lucy’s passion for evangelism was boundless. “As a writer and editor of several missionary periodicals, including The ‘Light Bearer’ which she started as a newsletter in 1904, Lucy deployed her literature skills to proclaim the Gospel.

“As a tribute to her sacrificial and impactful service, especially towards the liberation of slaves, “The Lucy Memorial Freed Slaves Home” was established in her honour.”

According to him Her life serves as a timeless reminder that every individual, in his or her own way, can make a profound difference in the lives of others and contribute to building a more compassionate and inclusive world.

He concluded by calling on Christians to support in sustaining the Light Bearer newspaper which is not just an honour to Lucy Kumm’s legacies but also ensuring that the light of knowledge, inspiration, and spiritual guidance continues to shine brightly for generations to come.

The COCIN President Rev. Dr. Amos Mohzo in his speech described the Light Bearer as an integral part of the Church community system which has encountered many challenges that hindered its smooth operation and Sustainability.

According to him the vision of the church is for the Light Bearer unit to evolved into a full fledged department by expanding its readership, increasing its online presence and providing timely and accurate news for the Church community.

He said the fund raising is to upgrade the Newspaper’s equipment, increase its digital presence and improve on the paper’s reporting capability. he thanked the people for their unwavering commitment and support.

While presenting awards to distinguished personalities who have been committed in their support for the Light Bearer, the Editor, Mrs. Elizabeth Salami said their contributions has help immensely in sustaining the newspaper to its present state.

The awards categories include sales, advert and patronage; leadership and post humus awards for late Nathan Dabak and late Gyang Bwede, Deputy Editor and a reporter who paid the supreme price while on active service.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Rev. Prof. Pandang Yamsat thanked the Light Bearer for recognizing their small efforts.

He said they were merely doing their little did which they never know that it was been noticed. He assured that they were committing themselves to further the vision of the Light Bearer to be the mouth piece of the Church and the down trodden.
