The Chief Executive Officer of Institute for Human Virology, Nigeria IHVN, Dr. Patrick Dakum has called on the Nigeria government to engage Community and Association leaders in the battle to subdue COVID-19 in the country.
Dr. Dakum who was speaking shortly after inspecting the Plateau State Human Virology Research Centre which was recently activated and accredited as a COVID -19 testing centre, making it the third testing centre in Plateau state.
The Centre which is situated within the premises of the Plateau State Specialist Hospital, Jos, is now equipped with the necessary, standard laboratory equipments, ready for use when the reagents are available.
Pleased with the level of readiness in the centre, Dr. Dakum commended staff of the centre and urged them to continue doing their best.
Dr. Dakum who said the one way to conquer COVID – 19 is by wearing of Facemask and Hand washing, said if Community and Association leaders whose members hold in high esteem are involved in the advocacy it will go a long way in reducing community spread of the virus.
“Here in Plateau State, there is a committee that is working to reach the people, the Community leaders are made to wear their facemasks and talk to their people. Go to the association of tricycle riders, they listen to their leaders more than any person, so if their leaders talk to them they will wear masks and make their passengers wear it also” he said.
He encouraged the citizens to be patient with all the steps taken in preventing the virus by obeying all the measures put in place before vaccine will be available.
The IHVN CEO applauded Governor Simon Lalong for his efforts in combating the virus in the state.
It will be recalled that some weeks ago the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu was in the state to also to ascertain the level of preparedness of the Centre in Jos.
