Covid19: Plateau residents accuse ASTC of using only water for Fumigation

Some residents of Plateau State have alleged that no chemical was applied in the said ongoing fumigation of major towns across the state.

The fumigation exercise which was flagged off by governor Simon Lalong on Friday last week at the popular Terminus roundabout and continued in the state is said to be part of measures to disinfect the state from the dreaded corona virus, though no confirmed case in the state yet.

Residents of some areas within the state capital complained of being locked down without any officials for the fumigation except security agencies on patrol to enforce the lockdown order.

Some areas where the fumigation was done, the residents alleged that ordinary water was sprayed instead of disinfecting chemicals.

A resident of Jos South local government alleged that the exercise was a scam.

“When I was serving as a corp member in Bayelsa state, we did a fumigation in a particular area and all the surrounding people perceived the chemical which lasted for days, unlike this one that even if you are standing there, you will never perceive anything” he said.

Another residents of Shendam local government also alledged that only water was used in the fumigation exercise.

Reacting to the allegation, the Managing Director of Agricultural Services and Training Centre ASTC who are responsible for the fumigation, Mrs. Susan Bentu, debunked the allegation and described it as baseless.

In her words, “ASTC did their work professionally in the presence of the chairmen of each of the local government areas using all the needed chemical for the work” but wonder why someone will sit in his room and accuse them baselessly.

“Remember that there is lockdown order, so if anyone sits in his house and tells you that water was sprayed, then I wonder how he saw the water, because they are supposed to be in their houses. We did not spray with people outside because we know the implication, so how can someone who is not outside tell you what is outside” she said.

Mrs. Bentu added that ASTC did their work perfectly by mixing all the relevant chemical for the fumigation.
