The Plateau State House of Assembly has described as a prayer answered, the enactment of the states legislators autonomy into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Spokesperson of the House, Philip Dasun while reacting to the development, said it is something that the assembly have been crying for and hope that governors of the various states will key into it by putting it into practice.
He said unlike when the executive sometimes regulate their activities financially, now the assembly will have the power to decide what is good for the house and as well for the state.
“You know it is said that he who plays the drum dictates the tune, but this time around the house will be independent to decide what is good for her. Often time the executive have been regulating activities of the house by way of controlling the house via the instruments of the financial resources” he said.
The member, representing Pankshin north in the state assembly noted that now, constituents should expect more dividends of democracy, because constituency projects can be regulated by the house and “this is a very good opportunity for democracy to thrive” he added.
Mr. Dasun assured people of the state that as soon as the governor domesticate the presidential order and as more as resources come into the house, the legislators will perform better and the constituents will feel their impact.
He said this will also give the assembly more power to checkmate activities of the executive through oversight functions for the betterment of the state.
The assembly spokesman was optimistic that the governor of the state, Simon Lalong, being a former speaker of the state assembly will not delay in domesticating the law for optimal performance as even before the law, he has been fair to the assembly by being in the front line for the assembly autonomy.
It could be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday signed into law Executive Order No. 10 of 2020 for the implementation of financial autonomy for state legislature and judiciary Order, 2020.
