Wife of the Niger state Governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello says her office has given free breast and cervical cancer screening to 9401 women in five years in the State.
1,650 women were screened in 2016, 2056 women in 2017, 2508 in 2018, 2189 in 2019, and 998 in 2020, says a press statement on Thursday issued by Ms. Aisha Wakaso, the First Lady’s Chief Press secretary.
Amina has also sponsored 101 women for free lumpectomy and biopsies, 55 for free mammogram/ultra sound scan and 10 for free treatment, the statement says.
“Collectively and individually, we need to commit to strengthen actions aimed to reduce the impact of cancer in Nigeria. This can be achieved by reducing cancer risk factors, screening, detecting cancer at early stages, treatment animproving access to diagnosis and palliative care,” Amina said.
The First Lady called for increased awareness on the causes and prevention of cancer as the world marks 2021 Cancer Day.
