The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has flagged-Off the 2025 Desilting in Jos North and Jos South local government areas of the State.
The exercise which took place opposite Dangote Cement Depot, Beach road in Jos North local government area, according to the Director General (DG) of PEPSA, Mr. Samuel Dapiya was to evacuate all debris in drainages within Jos North and Jos South local government areas ahead of this year’s raining season.
Represented by Mr. Izang Pate, the Director of administration in the agency, Mr. Dapiya said the evacuation is a precaution against flooding. He added that the evacuation will help mitigate or avert flooding in the state as predicted in some local government areas of the State.
“We have to clear out drainages to curtail unforeseen floods that could happen to us, reduce water borne diseases and maintain our environment to be conducive for us to stay.” He said.

He called on the Plateau citizens to support the exercise as he appreciated some Churches, Mosques and other organizations as well as individuals who have started the process within their jurisdiction.
The acting Zonal Director, National Environmental Standard and Regulations Enforcement Agency, (NESREA), Mr. Jude Appah said the environment is faced with numerous challenges occasioned by climate change, global warming among others which majorly are caused by human factors.
“So what we are asking Plateau people to do is to have an attitudinal change towards their environment. This gutter that we have started clearing today, you can see plastics, polythene and even pampers. So it is a personal thing that we have to work on .” He added.
The Executive Chairman of Jos North Local Government Council, Barrister John Christopher described the exercise as laudable as Jos-Bukuru metropolis is the heart of the Jos master plan and the heart of commercial activities where human activities are always on the increase.
He assured of his commitment to actualize a clean environment within his jurisdiction as he called for cooperation among citizens by disposing waste appropriately.

His counterpart from Jos South, Silas Patrick who also spoke encouraged the citizens to join hands with PEPSA to have a responsible society where the environment will be kept clean and safe for all.
According to him, to have a healthy society, citizens are to take serious the responsibility of keeping their environment clean.
Members of the Media Action for Health, Environment and Sustainable Development (MAHESD), were also at the flag-off to add their voice to the campaign for a clean and safe environment in Plateau State.
