Several days after 28 congregants were kidnapped during Sunday service in Katsina State, help has yet to reach the Christian villagers in Gidan Haruna village of Kankara Local Government Area.
“They are demanding for 50million Nigerian naira (109,886.20USD) for the 28 people kidnapped,” said Tijjani Isiaku, a villager whose wife and 2year-old son are among the hostages taken on 15 January.
“We do not have that kind of money; we are helpless,” said Ishaku in a phone interview.
The horrifying operation according to witnesses occurred on a bright Sunday morning while the locals were attending a Church service at the Global Mission Church.
More than 20 armed terrorists on eight motorcycles according to one witness, Saidu Ahmadu stormed the town of 40-50 residents at about 9:40am and encircled the Church firing their assault rifles in the air.
Around 35-40 people were attending the Church service at the time, said Ahmadu in a phone call.
“They were shouting Allahu Akhbar (God is great),” Ahmadu said.
Ahmadu who narrowly escaped through a window along with other worship said the terrorists forced 28 worshippers in the Church on their bikes and fled with them to a forest on the west of the town.
“We were helpless,” he said, regretting securities never intervened until several hours later.
Isiaku, 35 who was in Benin city where he worked at the time called his wife’s phone number but was greeted by a member of the terrorists gang.
Katsina Police in a statement confirmed the attack but assured they were on the trail of the terrorists.
