The Federal Government through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has donated 900 bags of cement to support victims of Katako Market in Jos North local government area of Plateau State.
Presenting the item at the Market in Jos on Saturday, Minister of the ministry who is also from Plateau State and the All Progressives Congress, APC, 2023 Governorship flag bearer, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda said the gesture is to help the victims rebuild their burnt shops and return to normal business.
Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda who was represented by the two lawmakers representing Jos North-North, Dr. Aliyu Adamu and member representing Jos North West, Hon. Mark Na’ah, said the gesture underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting citizens in times of disasters.
Speaking to Journalists shortly after the presentation, Hon. Mark Na’ah emphasized that Dr. Nentawe is committed to implementing long-term solutions aimed at alleviating poverty and restoring hope to affected individuals and businesses not only in Plateau State but Nigeria as a whole.
He said the Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda actually intended to visit to identify with the victims in person and make the presentation but couldn’t. However he recognised the urgent need to rebuild the burnt market to enable the shop owners return to their businesses, he therefore mobilized key stakeholders to present the 900 bags of cement.
While sympathizing with the victims on behalf of the Minister, the lawmakers urged officials of the Katako market to make judicious use of the cement and be fair and just in the distribution to meet the affected persons.
Responding on behalf of the victims, leader of the Timber B Association at the Market, Yusuf Aliyu, expressed gratitude to the Minister through his representative for identifying with them in times of their need. He assured that the affected persons will benefit from the Minister’s support.

He also recalled that when the incident occured, the member representing Jos North-North Dr. Aliyu Adamu also identified with them with Cash, Blocks and cement support. He appealed to the state government and other spirited individuals or organizations to also come to their aid.
Also speaking, another leader of the Katako market, Suleiman Mu’azu, said 170 shops where affected by the inferno last year.
According to him, they are taking measures to address a reccurance of the ugly incident by expanding passages to create access road for fire fighters at anytime. Other measures according to him to stop the calamity is the switching off of all the electrical appliances in the market after closing.
