Lalong Abandoned Road Project: Jos Community Resolves to Communal Labour

Sabon Gari, Mado Community in Tudun Wada, Jos North local government area of Plateau state resorted to community labour in an effort to fix the unmotorable road linking the Community, and other neighbouring communities.

The Sabon Gari Mado road network was part of the Governor Simon Lalong Legacy project that was awarded for construction in 2018 among many other road networks in the state but was later abandoned for reasons yet to disclosed.

Speaking with the Lightbearer at the communal work site, the Chairman of Sabon Gari Mado Community Development Association, Tudun Wada Jos, Nde Yilchini Jiwul, said the communal effort was necessitated by the worsening situation of the road occasioned by overflow of water from the top hill around the community.

He said the community heaved a sigh of relieve two years ago when the government awarded the contract to construct the road but the project contractors later abandoned the site few months later.

“You know, every rainy season, the rain use to wash the road and stones will surface causing untold hardships to motorists and everyone living in the community is affected in one way or the other, so we cannot just fold our hands and wait for the government anymore.

We made several efforts to see that government complete the work but the contractor told us that government did not release fund for him to resume site” the Chairman said.

He added that even owners of houses marked for demolition to pave way for the road construction in the community are yet to be compensated and the work has stopped since last year.

While appreciating youths of the community for responding to call for the communal work, particularly and individual who donated Cement, Gravels and Sand for the work, Nde Yilchini made a passionate appeal to the Lalong led government to come to the aid of the community and mobilize the contractors back to site to complete the project.

Efforts to get comments from the Project Engineer of the Jolex Construction Company, Engineer Mark Ajobe as at the time of filling this report proved abortive as he neither responded to calls or text messages put across to him by our correspondent.

Finding by Lightbearer reveals that the construction of the road network from Kabong Satelite Market to Tudun Wada, Sabon Gari and Mado road which has a total length of 6.95Km was awarded to Jolex Construction Company Ltd at the sum of N1.808,633,610.00k in February 2018.
