Mr. Mustapha Isah has been re elected as the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors for another term of two years.
The election which was conducted during the ongoing 2021 Biennial Convention in Kano State also saw Ali M. Ali elected as Vice President, Iyobosa Uwagiaren as Secretary while Steve Nwosu was elected Treasurer among other officials elected into various offices.
Earlier, while declaring the convention open, the host governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje welcome the Editors to the state and tasked them on a free and fair elections. He asked the Guild to promote professionalism and ethics to compliment and sustain press freedom.
In his remarks, the senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and one time the Guild’s President, Mallam Garba Shehu, called on the Editors to see themselves as playing a critical role as link between the people and government and as such should eschew pessimism, negativism and remours in their reportage.
A keynote presentation on the theme of convention, “The Media in COVID-19 Era :Challenges and Opportunities was taken by Prof. Umaru Pate, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Kashere, Gombe state.
He talked extensively on how the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted on the media. But however charged the Editors to reinvent and redesign journalism to fit into the changing context, develop new media funding models, promote investigative and data-driven journalism, build video and audio as the future media, promote journalism among younger people, invest in technology and build capacity and speed among others as ways to counter the challenges.
