The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) North Central Zone in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ Plateau State Council has organized a one day capacity building workshop for Journalists in Plateau State on the role of media in disaster management.
In his welcome address at the event which was held at the NUJ Press Centre Jos, the Zonal Coordinator NEMA North Central, Mr. Eugene Louis Nyelong who was represented by Mrs. Bintu Aminu said the training is to expose or share field experiences and chart an informed way forward for a professional management and reportage of disasters or emergencies as the case may be.
The NUJ Chairman Plateau State Council, Mr. Paul Jatau in his speech thanked NEMA for such initiative and expressed confidence that at the end of the workshop the journalists’ way of reportage would have improved. He also challenged NEMA to sustain such collaborative effort in the future.
Mr. James Manok who was one of the resource persons made a presentation on ‘Conflict Sensitive and Disaster Reporting’ where he advised journalists to always be sensitive when reporting conflict so as not to further escalate the situation.
On his part, the NEMA Zonal Coordinator through Mrs. Linda Enoche Adokun made a presentation on “Disaster Management in Nigeria and Media Engagement as Stakeholders.
