PASAN shutdown State House of Assemblies over Autonomy

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN has shutdown all state Assemblies in the country over non implementation of the Legislature Autonomy by the state governors.

The protest and the indefinite strike action according to the Plateau State Chapter Chairman of the Association, Mrs. Mary Komga, followed the expiration of the 21, 14 and 7 days ultimatum given by the association without positive response addressing their agitation.

“We want the implementation of order 10 that was assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2020 which gave financial autonomy to Parliamentary Staff” she said.

Mrs. Mary said the Assembly gate will remain close until they hear positive response from their national body.

Reacting to the development, Plateau State House Committee Chairman on Information, Mr. Philip Dasun who said though the strike action will truncate legislative proceeding, their action is legal.

He said the House was duly notified on the planned industrial action by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, to demand for their welfare which according to him is paramount.

It would be recalled that on 22 May, 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari had signed into Law an Executive Order to grant financial Autonomy to the legislature and the judiciary across the 36 states of the country.

The order also mandated the Accountant General of the Federation to deduct from source amount due to the state Legislatures and judiciaries from the monthly allocation of any state that refuses to grant such autonomy.

The order did not go down well with many of the governors which have delayed the implementation of the Autonomy and the Accountant General of the Federation has also failed to deduct from source as empowered by the order.

Members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, Plateau State Chapter who blocked entrance to the state assembly vowed to continue with their action until their demand is met.

The members who were chanting solidarity songs and dancing in a peaceful protest, also held Placards with inscriptions as “No Autonomy for state Assembly, No legislation in Nigeria. Grant autonomy to deepen Democracy and AGF implement order 10 among others”.
