PLASU seeks Amendment of Law Establishing the University

The Vice Chancellor of the Plateau State University, Bokkos, Prof. Yohanna Izam has pleaded with members of the Plateau State House of Assembly to amend the Law Establishing the University to a global standard.

The vice chancellor was speaking while interacting with members of the House Committee on Education at the Deputy Speaker’s Lodge on Tuesday in Jos, the Plateau State Capital.

Prof. Izam noted that the University is a dynamic enterprise and that the governance of the institution in terms of roles, responsibilities, staff expectations , pension scheme and other issues that affect staff welfare should be reflected in the reform of the legislatures.

“For instance, many Universities are running with two Deputy Vice Chancellors but in the law that established this University is only one Deputy Vice Chancellor that is assisting the Vice Chancellor” he said.

He also said issues of Faculties, schools and Colleges’ system should be clearly delineated in the law establishing the University. Also the mode of appointment among other minor issues are what the law should be amended to accommodate.

Prof. Izam also spoke on the security strategy the institution is adopting to improve on the security of lives and property of the institution, to include formation of a Police Outpost, suspension of social activities by 10pm, repair of some collapsed fence of the institution among others.

He appealed to all stakeholders especially local government council on prompt remittance of their part funding to the University. He revealed that the institution is insufficiently funded and that the prudence of the management is largely what is helping the school to run smoothly.

The Assembly Committee members on Education chaired by Eric Dakogol, while commending the vice chancellor said they should endeavour to carry all stakeholders along in the affairs of the institution and ensure that all the 17 local government in the State benefit from the School in terms of admission, employment among others.
