Plateau Community Cut off From Town Gets New Bridge

Residents of Golkung in Shiwer Community of Amper District, Kanke local government area of Plateau State have heaved a sigh of relief following the construction of a bridge linking the Village with Shiwer, the main town of the Community by member, representing Kanke Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Barrister Wallok Goma.

The community with an approximate population of 500 to 700 people according to the locals, had passed through bad experiences which led to loss of lives due to lack of access road during rainy seasons, a community leader says.

Mr. Iliya Lekgom who is the Deputy Chairman of Golkung Community Development Association, said the ongoing bridge construction by the member who is also a son of the community is a great relief to the entire community which will alleviate the suffering of the people.

The Bridge Under construction

“We usually come embark on community labour to make a local bridge with rafts but each time the rain fall heavily, it washed away. We find it difficult to cross during rainy season, especially mothers and Secondary School children.
Sometimes the students miss their examinations because they could not cross over to school. This usually makes them repeat classes.

“If we have emergencies like sickness or labour and we try to rush the person to the hospital in Shiwer and the river is full, we usually have to wait by the river side to allow the water subside. There was a time one of the women gave birth while waiting by the riverside” he said.

Reacting to the bridge construction, the Women Leader of the community, Mrs. Dokritmwa Garba said, it is an answered prayer because they find it difficult to cross over to access the milling machines and once you have crossed and it rains then you will be stranded on the other side till the water subsides.
