A Plateau Lawyer, Nantok Dashuwar says he will defend in court those arrested over “forceful distribution” of covid-19 palliatives “hoarded by Government” in the State.
In a tweet on Monday, Dashuwar who works with G.S. Pwul (SAN) attorney firm in Jos said he will specifically, without charge, defend those arrested for allegedly looting food and fertilizer.
“I strongly believe that these are downtrodden people who are not likely to get access to quality legal services.
“I also believe that these are not the real criminals. They are only victims of the system put in place by the real criminals.
If it were the big criminals in political office, their loot would be able to afford them big lawyers like SANs. But the people arrested don’t have those kinds of previleges,” said Dashuwar in an exclusive interview.
State Officials on Monday announced the setting of seven courts to try 307 suspects arrested for “looting” public and private properties in Jos on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Mr. Danladi Atu, the Secretary to the State Government was quoted by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to Governor Simon Lalong, Mr. Makut Macham as saying an emergency state security council meeting resolved to embark on “massive manhunt” of “looters” in the wake of the recent EndSARS protests.
