Plateau Rep member dies in auto-crash

Member representing Plateau State’s Jos North/Bassa constituency in the Nigerian House of Reps, Hon. Haruna Maitala is dead, statement by his media consultant, Joseph Adudu said, Saturday.

Mr. Maitala died on Friday, 2nd April, 2021 following a car accident along Abuja-Jos road, the statement says.

The Rep member will be buried Saturday morning according to Islamic rites, said Adudu.

Hon. Maitala’s Peugeot 4007 SUV with the Plateau license plate number JJN701RR crashed at about 3pm on Friday along Abuja-Jos road, it was learnt.

A disturbing video of the accident scene shows the ill-fated car crumbled on the ground. The condition of the car wreckage suggests serious fatalities from the accident.

A source who shared the video said only the driver was rescued alive. Voices in the background are also heard saying all occupants of the car except the driver survived.

Laying next to the car is a figure covered in leaves, believed to be the corpse of the Rep member.

Maitala’s ill-fated car

Family members however said the Rep member survived the accident and was receiving treatment in a Tertiary hospital in Keffi, Nasarawa State. But a popular politician and APC member, Hon. Gwani Muhammad Adam Alkali OON, sent a condolence message to the Rep member’s family shortly later.

A statement issued by Gwani’s spokesperson, Mr. Abu Maleek “extends his sincerest condolences to the immediate family of Late Hon. Haruna Maitala Jingir who died along with his son Ja’afar Maitala, and one of his office assistants Alhaji Danladi as a result of a ghastly motor accident along Keffi-Abuja road, in Nassarwa State.”

Gwani in the statement described Rep. Maitala as “father and a leader per excellence, and his death colossal, whose absence would be felt by many most especially the good people of Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency of Plateau, whom he represented at the Green chamber.”

A popular radio personality and close associate, Bello Lukman also published a condolence on his social media handle. Many others likewise, but the fate of the Parliamentarian was unknown until this morning.

Maitala was on his way to Jos for his son’s wedding on Saturday, when he crashed, it was gathered.
