Plateau Writers want Government to Redesign Education Curriculum

Plateau State Writers Society, seeks the redesigning of the nation’s Education curriculum to meet up with the 21st century demand of good writing and reading.

State Secretary of the Society who also doubles as the Secretary of Association of Nigeria Authors, ANA Mr. Meshak Emmanuel made the appeal at a 22 pages poetry book launch.

The book titled, “Lamentations of the Downtrodden” was written by an English and Literature teacher, Mr. Dungji Diyal and launched at the Government Secondary School, GSS, Giring in Jos recently.

Mr. Meshak who encouraged writing and reading among pupils from the pre-primary up to tertiary institutions, said writing and reading has the power to inform and bring about positive transformation of individuals and the nation hence, the need to revive the culture by redesigning the school curriculum to spur more reading and writing among students.

He advised that examination bodies like the West Africa Examination Council, WAEC, the National Examination Council, NECO among other bodies should allow students to write stories for themselves rather than give them topics which they have no idea about to write on in essay writing.

He also called on government and the well to do in the society to add value to the education system by investing on research works of creative minded people to tell the Nigeria story to the world in writing.

While congratulating Mr Dungji Diyal, the author of the book, he described him as his encourager and source of inspiration right from Federal College of Education Pankshin. Mr. Meshak also charged other teachers to put their lessons notes into book form to benefit students and the society.

Author of the Book, the “Lamentation of the Downtrodden” Mr. Dungji Diyal said he was motivated and inspired by his class and online students to write and publish the book.

“It’s been my desire to reach out to my generation using my art just like Wole Soyinka, David Rubadiri and others have done.

“It’s a known fact that writing is not an easy task, bearing that in mind, I started writing some few lines which metamorphosed into stanzas and now an anthology. This no doubt is an act of God, He provided the resources and the skill” said Mr. Dungji Diyal.

Principal of Government Secondary School, GSS, Giring, Mrs. Chundung Alamba salute the doggedness of the teacher whom she said is one of the committed teachers in the school and prayed for him to keep making the school proud.

The book, “Lamentations of the Downtrodden” talks about the cry of the masses of Nigeria, oppression of the poor and host of other ills in the society with the view and hope that some day the citizens will have a better Nigeria.
