World AIDS Day: Pathfinder International wants full Implementation of Anti Discrimination Act

As Nigeria joins other the world to commemorate this year’s World Aids Day, Pathfinder International has called for full implementation of the anti discrimination act by government at all levels.

Media and Communications Officer of the organization, Mr. Bayo Ewuola made the call while speaking with newsmen on activities marking the day in Abuja.

Mr. Bayo explained that despite intensive awareness, people living with HIV/AIDS still face discrimination in different areas of life, especially schools, work places, market places and hospital which as a result they are denied some of their fundamental human rights.

“So we seek the implementation of this act by government at all levels, so that all institutions and parastatals can adhere to it” he added.

He opined that HIV/AIDS is an epidemic which still has no vaccine hence, people should not underrate it, saying HIV is real.

He added that there is need for collective efforts to tackle it by promoting access to more contraceptive method that can empower women to protect themselves against this pandemic.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s World Aids Day, “End inequality. End AIDS. End pandemic” he said inequality exist everywhere like in the education sector, employment, especially in the healthcare system where many vulnerable people are denied access or cannot afford equals healthcare services.

“There is gap already, healthcare should be accessible to all persons who want to access it, that is why since yesterday we took the HIV/AIDS testing services to locations where young people, men and women who want to access it can have access to it” he said.

World Aids Day is designated on 1 December every year since 1988 to raise awareness of the Aids pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease with this year’s theme as “End inequality. End AIDS. End pandemic”.
