In a press release signed by the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Joyce Ramnap, the government described the Sunday, February 22, 2026 incident as “barbaric and senseless,” expressing deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives.

According to the statement, injured victims are receiving treatment at nearby health facilities, while a joint search and rescue team comprising security operatives and government officials have been deployed to assist victims, account for missing persons, and stabilize the affected community.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang condoled with families of the victims and directed security agencies to intensify operations in the area, strengthen security presence in surrounding communities, and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted. Residents were urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to aid investigations.

Meanwhile, the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) said ten people were killed in fresh attacks in Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas. The association stated that nine persons were killed at Ratatis, Dorowa Babuje, during a gunmen attack around 7:27 p.m. on Sunday, while one person was reportedly killed in a separate incident in Jol, Riyom LGA.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, BYM expressed concern over what it described as repeated attacks on farming communities and a lack of tangible arrests and prosecutions.

The group called on both the Federal and Plateau State Governments to move beyond routine condemnations and take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice. It also demanded the urgent deployment of adequate security personnel to vulnerable communities in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas.

Speaking at the scene of the attack, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo of the Church of Christ in Nations commended security operatives for their swift response. He said community leaders had consistently urged youths to remain peaceful despite repeated provocations, emphasizing calls for restraint and reliance on lawful measures.

Also addressing security officials, BYM President Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri commended the efforts of Operation Enduring Peace but urged stronger measures to safeguard farming communities and prevent further violence.

The Plateau State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and assured residents that additional proactive security measures are being reinforced to sustain peace and stability across the state.
