The Plateau State Government has condemned an attack on traders returning from the Bukuru Kara Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area, calling the incident “sad and unacceptable.”

The attack reportedly happened around the State Low-Cost housing area in Bukuru. The government said the victims were traders identified as belonging to the Fulani herders.

In a statement on Monday, the government, led by Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The statement did not give details of the number of people affected.

The government has directed security agencies to investigate the circumstances of the attack. This includes finding out who was behind it and why it was carried out.

It urged communities, traders, pastoralists and other stakeholders to stay calm and avoid actions that could worsen tensions or deepen divisions. It said there must be no reprisal attacks and no one should take the law into their own hands.

The government said it is also talking with relevant stakeholders to improve security along vulnerable routes and prevent further attacks. It encouraged residents to give useful information to security authorities to support the investigation.

The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap. It restated the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and urged citizens to go about their lawful activities.
