The Lawmaker representing Barkin Ladi State Constituency at the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Dickson Chollom has expressed worry over the continuous killings and destruction of farmlands of his Constituents.
Hon. Dickson decried the incessant killings in a motion during plenary of the 10th Assembly on Tuesday.
He cited section 14(2)(b) and 17(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, where it stated that the fundamental objectives of Government is the provision of Security and welfare for it’s people, maintaining the sanctity and dignity of the human person, and protecting it’s citizens at all times.
Hon. Dickson said the reverse is the case in his Constituency as he recalled that from 31st of August to 8th of September, 2025, there were attacks in different communities in his constituency that claimed lives and destruction of farmlands by the attackers.
“This heinous acts include the beheading of two men, Goodluck Ayuba and Elkana Pam from Nyarwai community of Fan District. This was followed by the killing of one Toma Choji in Inding Sesut, Rafan Ward of Fan District and a Fulani man in same Nyarwai community recently.
“On the 8th of September, 2025, an adult was killed in Gindin Akwati of Gashish District. There was also incident of Cow rustling and farm destruction despite several calls for intervention.” He lamented.
The Lawmaker appealed to his colleagues to resolve to call on the Plateau State Government and Operation Enduring Peace as well as other security agencies to as a matter of urgency, intensify efforts to curb the escalating security trend in Barkin Ladi and it’s environs.
He also called on relevant authorities to conduct thorough investigation into the recent killings and bring the perpetrators to justice to serve as deterrent to other criminals and increase security presence and patrol surveillance in all flashpoint communities to prevent further loss of lives and property.
The Lawmaker also called for humanitarian support to the affected communities to help them cope with their losses.
Another prayer of the Lawmaker is on the need for the government to revisit and implement existing security blueprint aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence and protecting the lives and property of all citizens irrespective of their ethnic or religious affiliation.
