Plateau LG Elections: PLASIEC Adjusts Schedule of Activities, Election Date

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced an adjustment to the schedule of activities and the election date for the 2026 Local Government elections in the state.

Briefing journalists at the commission’s headquarters in Jos, the Chairman of PLASIEC, Plangji Cishak, disclosed that the new date for the conduct of elections into the 17 Local Government Councils of Plateau State is Wednesday, 9th September, 2026.

He explained that the adjustment became necessary to ensure full compliance with relevant provisions of the PLASIEC Law, 2024, and the Electoral Act, 2022.

According to the revised timetable, the publication of the notice of election and release of the election timetable will take place on Thursday, 4th September, 2025, in line with Section 33(1) of the PLASIEC Law, 2024.

Party primaries, including the resolution of disputes arising from the primaries, are scheduled to hold from Saturday 7th to Thursday, 12th March, 2026, to enable political parties democratically nominate candidates as required by Section 34 of the PLASIEC Law, 2024.

The collection of nomination forms (Form PEC001 and Form PEC4C) by political parties will take place at the PLASIEC headquarters from Friday, 13th to 17th March, 2026, while submission of the forms is scheduled for Wednesday, 18th to Thursday, 19th March, 2026, in accordance with Sections 34 and 35 of the PLASIEC Law, 2024, and Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

PLASIEC will publish the personal particulars of candidates at its headquarters and local government offices on Saturday, 21st March, 2026, as provided under Section 35(3) of the PLASIEC Law, 2024, and Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

The verification and screening of chairmanship candidates and their running mates will be conducted from Monday, 23rd March to Tuesday, 24th March, 2026, while councillorship candidates will be screened from Wednesday, 25th March to Saturday, 28th March, 2026, in line with Sections 39(2), 39(3), and 42(3) of the PLASIEC Law, 2024.

The commission will publish the list of qualified and cleared candidates on Monday, 30th March, 2026. The receiving of appeal cases is scheduled for Tuesday, 31st March, 2026, while hearing of appeals will take place on Wednesday, 1st April, 2026.

PLASIEC will publish the final list of nominated candidates on Thursday, 9th April, 2026, in accordance with Section 35 of the PLASIEC Law, 2024, and Section 32(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Campaigns by political parties will officially commence on Saturday, 11th April, 2026, and end at 12:00 midnight on Monday, 7th September, 2026, as stipulated under Sections 81(1) and 83(1) of the PLASIEC Law, 2024, and Sections 94(1) and 96 of the Electoral Act, 2022.

The last day for withdrawal or replacement of candidates by political parties is Saturday, 30th May, 2026, while replacement of withdrawn candidates is scheduled for Saturday, 13th June, 2026. Screening and submission of nomination forms for substituted candidates will be completed between Monday, 15th June and Wednesday, 17th June, 2026.

The publication of the official register of voters is scheduled for Tuesday, 21st July, 2026, while political parties are expected to submit the names and addresses of polling agents to the commission by Wednesday, 12th August, 2026.

PLASIEC will publish the notice of poll on Monday, 17th August, 2026.

The election day has been fixed for Wednesday, 9th September, 2026, with voting scheduled to take place from 8:00am to 3:00pm, in line with Section 33 of the PLASIEC Law, 2024.
