COCIN Elects New Deputy General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Sylvester Dachomo.

The Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) has elected Rev. Dr. Sylvester Dachomo as its new Deputy General Secretary following an emergency General Church Council (GCC) meeting held on Thursday at the Church’s headquarters in Jos, Plateau State.

Rev. Dr. Dachomo emerged victorious after polling 161 votes, Rev. James Ayizeh, secured 118 votes, while Rev. Assoc. Prof. Caleb Dami garnered 26 votes.

A total of 305 delegates participated in the election conducted to fill the vacancy created by the elevation of the former Deputy General Secretary to the office of General Secretary in May this year.

Chairman of the COCIN Electoral Committee, Justice Daniel Longji (Rtd.), declared Rev. Dr. Dachomo the winner after he secured more than 51 percent of the total valid votes cast.

Speaking before the election, COCIN President, Rev. Dr. Amos Mohzo, thanked God for preserving the lives of delegates and expressed appreciation for their commitment in attending the emergency meeting in line with the Church’s constitution.

Drawing his exhortation from Ezekiel 37:1-6, Rev. Mohzo urged delegates to allow the Holy Spirit to guide their decisions rather than personal interests or human preferences.

He reminded the Council that while delegates might be familiar with the candidates’ qualifications and experiences, only God truly knows who is best prepared for the responsibility of leading the Church.

The COCIN President cautioned delegates against tribalism, sectionalism, manipulation, political bargaining, personal ambition, and every form of human pressure capable of influencing the outcome of the election.

According to him, leadership in God’s kingdom is founded on character before competence, stressing that humility, integrity, spiritual maturity, faithfulness, and the fear of God are indispensable qualities for anyone occupying the office.

Rev. Mohzo described the office of the Deputy General Secretary as strategic to the administration of COCIN, noting that the office works closely with the President, General Secretary, Executive Council, Church institutions, and provincial and regional leaders to ensure effective administration and unity.

He further emphasized that the successful candidate must not only possess administrative competence but also demonstrate commitment to preserving the unity of the Church, promoting accountability, encouraging cooperation among leaders, and advancing COCIN’s mission.

The COCIN President concluded by reminding delegates that Church leadership is a platform for service rather than status, expressing confidence that the newly elected Deputy General Secretary would faithfully uphold the Church’s constitution, strengthen its administration, and support the vision of the denomination.
