Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has granted absolute pardon to 130 inmates and commuted the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The governor announced the exercise of his prerogative of mercy in his independence goodwill message to Plateau citizens and Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to commemorate the October 1, 2026 Independence anniversary.
According to Mutfwang, the decision followed due consultation with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and was taken pursuant to the powers conferred on him by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
The four inmates whose death sentences were reduced to life imprisonment are Zuhumnan Musa, Jeremiah Aese, Pam Lang and Thoma Danboyi, while 130 other inmates were granted absolute pardon.
The governor said the Independence anniversary offered Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of past leaders, acknowledge prevailing challenges, celebrate achievements and renew their faith in the promise of a stronger, united and prosperous Nigeria.
Gov.Mutfwang urged Nigerians to honour the legacy of the nation’s founding fathers by preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
He stressed that nation-building was a responsibility passed from one generation to another, adding that every citizen had a role to play in building a peaceful, stable and prosperous Nigeria.
The governor said Nigeria’s strength lies in the collective determination of its citizens to rise above their differences and build a country where every citizen has a sense of belonging and an opportunity to fulfil their aspirations.
He also acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in sustaining national unity and stability, as well as advancing the Nigerian project.
He commended the President’s emphasis on national cohesion, peace, economic development and the collective responsibility of Nigerians to build a stronger nation.
On Plateau State, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a state where citizens can pursue their aspirations in an atmosphere of peace, security, justice and inclusive development.
He commended the people of Plateau for their resilience, patience, patriotism and contributions to the development of the State and the nation, urging them to keep faith in the Nigerian project despite the challenges confronting the country.
